STUDENT ORGANIZATION

Student organizations are an integral part of the educational program at Western Area CTC.  These co-curricular experiences provide students with the opportunities to develop leadership skills and to participate in community service activities.  Students are also able to compete locally, regionally, statewide, and nationally in skills and leadership competitions in their occupational specialty. 

Students may participate in the following organizations:

American Welding Society The American Welding Society student organization at WACTC is operated by the students. In September all students become members of the AWS. Also student organization votes on the student chairman and the executive committee. This membership permits students to compete in welding competitions in December and attend the student awards in March, Also throughout the year monthly meetings held by the Pittsburgh chapter. These meetings are informative and bring awareness to the welding industry. These meetings range from new techniques, welding at NASCAR, and even at the Harley Davidson plant in York Pa. In September the Pittsburgh section holds plant tours through area business such as the Brownsville Marina and American Bridge. The WACTC student section holds meetings throughout the year to plan plant tours holds welding certifications and the purchase of welding equipment and WACTC T-shirts.
FCCLA Home Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is a dynamic and effective national student organization that helps young men and women become leaders and addresses important personal, family, work, and societal issues. Participations in national programs and chapter activities helps members develop Skills for Life-planning, goal setting, problem solving, decision making and interpersonal communications. FCCLA is for students enrolled in family and consumer sciences education.

The Robotics Club at Western Area CTC, is club comprised of students in grades 10-12 with technical expertise in automotive, drafting, electrical occupations, networking, machine shop, and welding. These students form a team to enter in the Southwestern Pennsylvania BotsIQ competition each spring.

From their website, “BotsIQ is a unique educational program that motivates students to learn about technology to help them prepare for the priority and high-demand jobs of the future. It introduces students to a range of technologies as they plan, design, build, test, and battle 15-pound robots. At the same time they develop the skills desperately needed in the workplace such as teamwork, problem solving, and communication.”

National Technical Honors Society  
Interact Community Service Club The Interact Club of Western Area Career and Technology Center is a national based service club affiliated with Rotary Clubs International. Our sponsor is the Canonsburg-Houston Rotary Club. As a service club we raise funds for charity, have food drives and clothing drives and try to support our community in ways that are meaningful and helpful. We also help our sponsor Rotary club by supporting their charitable work. As a member of Interact you receive community service hours for all activities sponsored by the club.
Skills USA
