This Geometry course is designed to teach the students the basic properties of polygons and circles, including area and perimeter/circumference. Surface area and volume of geometric solids is also included. This course will also include the writing of deductive proofs in a geometric setting.
Course Description:
This course develops students’ spatial reasoning, increases their geometric understanding, and connects their informal understanding to formal mathematics. Through group activities, manipulative, and computer software, students are able to make the transition from concrete to abstract thinking. While making connections with algebra, students facilitate a deeper understanding of these concepts. As a result, students improve their mathematical understanding and reach a new level of self-confidence. In addition, mathematical concepts are often integrated into the career and technical trade areas.
Course Topics:
Discover/use formulas for area and perimeter of two-dimensional shapes
Realize a need/discover/use the Pythagorean/Distance Formula
Problem solving involving geometric themes
Basic terminology used in geometry
Specialized relationships between angle pairs
Connecting Algebra to Geometry
Exploration of transformations
Mapping notation
Similarity and congruency
Algebraic representations of Quadrilaterals
Discover/use formulas for volume and surface area of three-dimensional shapes
Circles and relationships among chords, arcs, radi, and tangents
