ACADEMICS
English, mathematics, science, and social studies are the academic courses offered at Western Area Career & Technology Center. These academic programs are supplemental to the vocational instructional areas.
Non-CreditStudents who exhibit a deficiency in an academic subject area will be enrolled in one academic class for one nine-week period. These tutorial classes will primarily focus on remediation of academic skills and preparation for the PSSA exam. A variety of methods are used, including online programs.
CreditStudents will be placed in academic classes – English, mathematics, science, and/or social studies – for credit based upon the recommendation of the sending school. Students may take these courses if they need an academic course to graduate and cannot otherwise take this course at the home school, or if they choose to double-up within an academic area in the same year. Upon the successful completion of the vocational and academic courses, these students will be awarded three credits in their vocational program and one credit in the academic discipline. Credit classes currently offered include: Algebra I, Algebra II, Applied Physics, Economics, English 10, English 11 & 12, Geometry, and Government.
Online Credit
Western Area CTC offers credible online courses through the University of Nebraska and others to students who need academic credit in courses not normally offered at Western Area CTC. Students electing to take an online course for credit must be self-motivated. In addition, online credit courses often require projects to be completed at home and mailed in. All assignments and tests have deadlines which students must meet to ensure timely completion of the course. Students will be provided access at Western Area CTC to computers and the internet to submit reports and to take online tests. Most assignments and all tests require a proctor, who is provided by Western Area CTC. The following online courses have been taken by Western Area CTC students in the past – Psychology; General Homemaking: Clothing and Foods; Pre-Calculus/Trigonometry; 10th Grade English; 11th Grade English; and Health.
